6&7 September: Special Workshop : Indigo Resist Pastes and Batik Two Day Workshop

€200.00

We’re thrilled to host another collaborative weekend with Colombian natural dyer Laura Castro here in our Athens studio. This time we’ll explore the deep blue world of indigo resist pastes and the ancient tradition of batik. Join us for two days and dive into these complementary resist-dyeing practices.

Saturday, 6 September & Sunday, 7 September : 11:00–15:30
Location: Parren 3, Kallirois, Athens
Class size: Maximum 8 students

Join us for a special two-day workshop dedicated to the beauty and depth of indigo, where Colombian natural dyer Laura Castro and Athens-based natural dyer Christiana Vardakou come together to share their knowledge of traditional resist techniques.

Across the weekend, you’ll discover how to prepare an indigo vat, how to work with indigo resist pastes—including Katazome (a traditional Japanese technique) , mineral-based, and organic recipes—as well as the ancient art of batik, using melted wax to create intricate patterns that reveal themselves through dye. These techniques, though rooted in different cultural traditions, complement one another by showing how fabric can hold stories, layers, and contrasts through the dialogue of wax, paste, and indigo.

This hands-on workshop will guide you through fabric preparation, indigo vat preparation, paste and wax application, layering methods, dipping in the indigo vat, and wax removal, giving you the tools to explore resist dyeing both traditionally and intuitively. Whether you prefer stencils, block printing, brushwork, or freehand drawing, you’ll be encouraged to experiment and create unique textile artworks.

By the end, you’ll take home a collection of hand-dyed cotton pieces made with the techniques you’ve learned, as well as a digital PDF guide to continue your practice. More than samples, these textiles will be personal expressions of your weekend with indigo—shaped by history, culture, and your own creativity.

✨ No previous experience is required—this workshop is open to all curious makers.
✨ All materials are provided.
✨ Language of instruction: English.
