Saturday 21st March: Advanced Natural Dyeing Workshop

€145.00

Advanced Natural Dyeing Workshop

Deepening colour, chemistry & control in natural dyes

This advanced workshop is designed for those who already have a basic understanding of natural dyeing and wish to go deeper into colour development, fibre behaviour, and modifier experimentation.

Working with historic dyestuffs and traditional methods, we will explore how subtle changes in preparation and chemistry can radically transform colour.

Location: Kallirois Parren 3, Athens
Duration: 4.5 hours (10:30 – 15:00, including a short break)
Class size: Maximum 6 students

What you will learn

In this intensive, hands-on workshop, you will work with classic, high-impact natural dyes and learn how to control and expand your colour palette through mordanting and modifiers.

Key topics covered:

Scouring & Preparation
• Proper scouring methods for plant fibres and animal fibres
• Why preparation is crucial for depth, clarity, and longevity of colour

Mordanting with Alum
• Two different recipes for alum mordanting for silk, wool and cotton, and linen
• Understanding fibre-specific mordant behaviour
• How mordant concentration affects final colour

Primary Dye Baths
You will dye with:
• Madder roots
• Cochineal
• Logwood bark

Learning how extraction methods, temperature, and timing influence colour results.

Modifiers & Colour Shifting
We will transform our dyed samples using modifiers such as:
• Iron
• Copper
• Citric acid
• Cream of tartar
• Additional modifiers

You’ll observe and record how each modifier alters hue, tone, and saturation — creating a wide colour spectrum from a single dye bath.

Fibres & Materials
You will work on:
• Wool yarn
• Cotton yarn
• Silk fabric
• Linen fabric
• Cotton fabric

Understanding how the same dye behaves differently across fibres.

What you will make

You will create an advanced natural dye sample book, including:

• Multiple shades from each dyestuff
• Before-and-after modifier samples
• Fabric and yarn swatches across all fibres used

This sample book becomes a technical and creative reference you can return to again and again.

What to bring

• A notebook for detailed notes and colour observations
• Curiosity, patience, and a willingness to experiment
You can bring one organic yarn max 50g or one piece of organic fabric 50cm x 50cm.

Language

The workshop will be taught in Greek and/or English, depending on the participants.
